Business of Bandh

In Naradaa’s place, we did not have any means of protest. So we decided to have some new laws introduced into our system.

So, Naradaa discussed with many people and found several ways to protest.

Stop the buses, cars and all other vehicles plying on the road. We must keep insisting that the protest is non-violent. What it actually means is that it is non-violent as long as there are no vehicles on the road.

Make sure that no shops are open – again non-violent as long as no shop is open.

Take out demonstrations and protest marches with slogans. When two or three opposing groups take out processions in and around the same place, then the protest can turn a bit violent, but one can’t help it because you can’t go against the law of  physics.

Close all schools and bring the school children to street. After all, they are the citizens who are going to take over tomorrow and should learn and be aware of the political processes and protests.

Fast – meaning not the speed, but the hunger-strike. This is in several categories. One day fast, Three-day fast, Fast unto death etc.

Strikes – Normally, the procedure is like this. A strike is declared by someone like a trade union or any other aggrieved party. The opposing party who are the authorities declares it as illegal. The striking party will make life miserable for part of the public and will say that unless all their demands are met, the strike and sufferings will continue. After a few days and a few meetings, the strike will be withdrawn because the authorities have agreed to look into the demands of the aggrieved. And the public had the benefits of a few days of sufferings.

There are probably a few more including stopping the functioning of institutions etc. Naradaa was told that all these methods are constitutionally permitted. After all, these protests are the essense of freedom and democracy. These protests can be individually undertaken or all of them together. When one manages to stop the normal life from functioning it will be called a successful Bandh.

And probably by consensus, the Government doesn’t protest. This is one thing Naradaa could not understand. If the opposition can protest against the Government, the Government should be allowed to protest against the opposition also. One must be fair. It will be interesting to watch both Government and opposition are protesting with a Bandh.

Naradaa also has been advised to look into the business aspects of the Bandh. If properly handled, can Bandhs be turned into good businesses?
