I was always fascinated with the term 'world class'. But I still have not fully understood the meaning of it.
Many times I have heard, especially through some of the advertisements stressing that the advertisers' facilities are world class. Which part of the world we should consider as a standard to determine the reference point, at the top of all classes?
This world class thought process started when I was travelling by flight one day and going through one of those in-flight reading magazines. Two instituitions had advertised that they had world class facilities. You can have first class, superior class, better class etc. which basically say that you have better facility than another. A business class passenger gets better facilities than a 'y' class passenger. But a world class? Is it a 'world class' first class facility and 'world class' second class facility?
Then is it the class, where the maximum number of people avails the facility, to be called world class facility? That could be the most democratic way of describing it. In that case, we have got world class railway compartments, haven't we?
Or is it the facility that least number of people can afford?
I was fascinated with the thought process going on in my mind and decided to google it. One of the definitions said, 'ranking among the best in the world....'
'Good, fair enough', I thought. Now I can sleep peacefully, knowing that we have so many world class schools, hospitals, athletes, airlines etc. Because even in google, I found many many advertisements citing world class facilities.
